One of my best friends, Libby, is the loudest person in the room. She is an engaging, wonderful storyteller. You can hear her voice distinctly in a crowd, and she was even shushed once in a loud Mexican restaurant.
I am not like Libby. I don’t crave being the center of attention, but I enjoy watching Libby captivate the room. I also value time alone to process and think, which energizes me.
Libby’s an extrovert, and I’m an ambivert — meaning on the personality spectrum, I fall somewhere between an extrovert and an introvert, although I admittedly feel closer to an introvert.
Before I pursued a PR career, I believed the profession was only filled with extroverts and individuals craving the spotlight. I quickly learned it’s not that way, and our agency is a wonderful and diverse mix of introverts, extroverts and ambiverts.
While extroverts (and ambiverts) bring exceptional value to our company and the profession, I’d like to take a moment to recognize how the unique strengths of introverts can benefit a PR agency or organization.
