An informative, interactive and fun workshop intended to help external and internal communications professionals improve their news writing and editing skills, and also increase their news placement success.

The workshop will cover:

  • How journalists define news and evaluate the news releases they receive.
  • Key elements of a news release and a media advisory (and their differences).
  • Seven steps to writing a news release.
  • Seven questions to ask when editing a news release.
  • How to make your news writing easier to read.
  • The most popular topic among all readers.
  • The magic of “S-T” words.
  • Additional forms of news writing such as advertorials, contributed articles and op-ed pieces.
  • When not to send out a news announcement. 

Participants will have the opportunity to practice their news writing skills!

Session One: Diving into the mind of a journalist and digging into news releases and media advisories.

  • Identify the characteristics of a journalist and how they assess news releases and story pitches.
  • Identify the main elements of a news release and a media advisory (and their differences).

Thursday, Nov. 14

Guest Speaker: Andy Giegerich, managing editor, Portland Business Journal

Session Two: Advice for writing and editing news announcements, including four case studies.

  • Identify the seven steps to writing/editing a news release.
  • Identify ways to make your news writing easier to read.

Tuesday, Nov. 19

Guest Speaker: Jeff Manning, investigative reporter, The Oregonian

Session Three: Beyond the news release: advertorials, contributed articles, letters to the editor and op-ed pieces; fun with grammar; writing with consistency; and when not to send out a news announcement.

  • Identify some other forms of news writing including advertorials, contributed articles and op-eds.
  • Identify the times when not to send out a news announcement.
