APR Opens Doors to Career Growth

By Heather Cavanaugh, APR

A recent study, "Bridging the Diverse Leader Gap in Public Relations Through Accreditation," prepared by a Universal Accreditation Board (UAB) research workgroup,* confirms that the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) can open doors to management positions, especially for diverse public relations practitioners.

The research workgroup found that public relations professionals who earn the APR are more likely to achieve salary increases, promotions and leadership opportunities. Specific ways to support candidates in their career growth were also identified.

Current APRs, employers and PR practitioners each have a role supporting aspiring public relations professionals in ways like the following:

  1. Role of mentors. Previous studies show that current APRs play an important role by serving as mentors. They provide encouragement, emotional support and guidance on how to prepare for the APR. If you are an APR, find mentees you can encourage to pursue their APR. If you’re interested in earning your APR, seek out a mentor who can advise you.
  2. Role of employers. Employers play a vital role supporting employees interested in earning their APR. They should support membership in professional associations, cover expenses and study time associated with the APR exam and recognize the value of the APR credential.
  3. Role of PR practitioners. Those interested in earning the APR should request time and resources for professional development. Talk with your employer and seek the resources you need.

If you want to advance your career in public relations and have not yet earned the Accreditation in Public Relations, research suggests it is a great next step along your career path!
