At The Ready: Surviving Crisis with Leadership Communications

April 22, 2021 2:00 PM – 3:00 p.m.

As our world continues to reel in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic's initial scare, healthcare communicators and hospital leaders have a unique opportunity to learn best practices from the triumphs we've had as well as the mistakes we've made while navigating it. In this interactive session, John Palmer, M.S., APR, director of Media and Public Relations for the Ohio Hospital Association, and M.J. Clark, M.A., APR, Fellow PRSA, vice president of Integrated Leadership Systems, will lead participants in discussions that explore best practices gleaned during this serious health crisis that can be applied every day, not just during a crisis.

Through interactive discussions embedded into helpful content, John and M.J. will lead participants through the steps in organizing a crisis response that includes appropriate accessibility. It's important for attendees to understand who should be included when, and how communication should be handled to ensure maximum alignment and establish trust with key stakeholders. They will share advanced tips on how to deal with stress internally, within the hospital as a whole and on their particular teams, both during and after the pandemic. The speakers will help participants understand the important steps to take to ensure stakeholder engagement and how to employ a strategic approach when a new crisis takes you by surprise, as this one did.

Understanding how emotional intelligence and assertive communication can be utilized during times of extreme stress is vitally important to ensuring employee retention, confidence in the organization, and respect for others. Speakers will share a three-step assertive communication model that people can use to have respectful conversations during unsettling times and moving into the future. Presenters will share how to turn learnings from this difficult time into improvements in overall hospital systems that will positively impact the future by providing tips on how to continue best practices in communication and stress management post-pandemic. Throughout the presentation, facilitators will engage the audience in sharing stories and tips of their own, so practical approaches that worked for them can benefit all those present.
