Cultivating a Culture of Transparency for Your Healthcare Organization in a Post-COVID World

April 22, 2021 2:00 PM – 3:00 p.m.

Just as the COVID-19 pandemic exponentially accelerated the change that was already taking place in the healthcare industry, it also increased the expectations for transparency from hospitals and health systems. During the height of this global health crisis, healthcare providers were often looked to as the source of truth in their communities amidst declining trust in the federal government and the news organizations.

The pandemic put many healthcare communicators in a challenging position: having to walk the line between providing important public health information and protecting the privacy of patients - all while simultaneously preventing the public from panic. As healthcare communicators fielded inquiries from journalists about hospitalization rates and supplies such as PPE and ventilators and wrote talking points for caregivers in preparation for difficult conversations with patients and family members, many were confronted with the ethical dilemmas involved with finding the balance between sharing enough and sharing too much in a space where you often can't share anything at all.

In this session, we'll talk about how to cultivate a culture of transparency for your hospital or health system by establishing boundaries that protect your organization but also that allow you to build trust with the patients and communities you serve.

Looking through the lens of this COVID-19 pandemic, we'll cover:
- What transparency is, and more importantly, what it isn't
- How to define what transparency looks like for your organization
- How to set parameters for how much to share, and when
- How to build transparency allies across your organization (legal, compliance, etc.)
- Managing expectations about transparency in the C-Suite
