Inclusion Across Borders: Culturally Competent Engagement and Communication
October 29, 2020 1:30 PM – 2:20 p.m.
Session Type: Special Interests
Diversity and inclusion (D&I) are critical as our population and environments change, particularly during these highly volatile times. D&I fosters creativity and innovation by bringing diverse perspectives to the table, and a diverse team allows organizations to be competitive in the global economy. By focusing on the full gamut of dimensions of D&I, organizations can better understand their internal and external stakeholders at a deeper level.
Based on key lessons, participants will learn about communicating with awareness and knowledge of inclusion and equity issues that affect minority populations, and also learn about the PRSA national survey results related to the ranking of D&I dimensions. Panelists will address key concepts and strategies needed to develop culturally competent communication plans that are inclusive of race, gender identity, people with different opinions and perspectives, and age.
Through case studies, participants will learn about successful campaigns that have been effective in representing and including the groups mentioned above.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Identify D&I key terms and concepts related to race, gender identity, diverse perspectives and age — across cultures and generations.
• Construct strategies to communicate with awareness and knowledge of issues affecting minority populations.
• Define ways to educate their staff on culturally competent and inclusive communication.
