3 Ways to Share the Load and Find Peace
By Monique Farmer, APR

Our profession demands a lot from us. The hours are long. The pace is demanding. The projects are often last minute and it can be a point of pride to take on as much as we possibly can — to do it all ourselves, even if we suffer in the process. This same drive to do the most can trickle into our lives outside of work too; and it can leave us feeling rundown, burnt out and even resentful.
When I began my career, I bought into the idea that more is more. I pretty much said yes to every request, took on every task and often avoided delegating work, assuming that sharing the load would reflect poorly on my own capabilities. But over the years, to my great relief, I’ve learned that I don’t have to do it all myself — as a PR professional, as a parent or even as a human being.
By finding people who can help support me and identifying professionals who do many things even better than me, I’m able to ensure that everything that needs to get done, gets done well. This revelation has afforded me the time to take care of myself in ways that help me recharge and show up with more energy and enthusiasm for my job and my family.
When you’re used to an individual contributor mindset, it can be hard to shift to a team approach. It requires us to let go and trust in others, but it can be a game-changer. Here are three key steps you can take to share the load and care for yourself by finding the right support.
