A Mid-Level Manager’s Journey Through Unemployment

In the ever-evolving landscape of the modern workplace, career shifts have become increasingly common, with professionals often finding themselves at a crossroads. And at some point in a person’s career, an itch for change may arise.
I worked for a fantastic agency just shy of nine years and had multiple professional development opportunities. I imagined working in an agency setting for my whole career. But things change — I changed.
As a mid-level manager with over 10 years of experience, I found myself at a cross section of “Stay Here” and “Go There.” Through my involvement in volunteer work with my local and county governments, I felt a natural pull toward working in state government.
Despite the desire to traverse new waters, I did not know how to shift gears from agency to government. Yet, as destiny would have it, I was given the opportunity to embark on a new journey and that moment in time marked a turning point in my career and my personal identity.
Facing the unfamiliar territory of unemployment, I proactively embraced the challenges and uncertainties with determination and courage. I felt a mix of emotions and questions. Will I have enough time to land a position I was excited to fill? Am I qualified for government after working so long in a private agency? I was apprehensive, yet excited, about the unknown path ahead.
Although the prospect of unemployment during a career transition may appear daunting, I encourage you to take the leap. From self-doubt to gaining clarity, my experience may offer valuable lessons for those beginning a similar journey.
