From Setback to Comeback: Navigating Job Rejections

You’ve heard it before, and I will say it again: Job hunting can truly be an emotional roller coaster. One moment you’re riding high on the excitement of a promising interview, and the next, you’re faced with the disappointment of rejection. It’s crucial to understand that rejection is a natural part of any job search. How you perceive and process these setbacks can significantly impact both your job search and your professional future.

Even the most qualified candidates face rejection, often for reasons beyond their control. A company’s decision not to move forward with your application isn’t necessarily a reflection of your worth or abilities. Factors such as team dynamics, specific skill requirements, budgets or internal restructuring are just some things that can all play a role in a company’s hiring decisions. For the job seeker, a smart strategy is to use moments of rejection as catalysts for self-improvement.

Do: Express gratitude, ask for constructive feedback and maintain relationships.

When you receive a rejection, your first response should be one of gratitude. Thank the interviewers, hiring managers or recruiters who were part of the process for their time and consideration. This simple act is very professional, and it leaves a positive impression on teams. If appropriate, then politely ask your primary point of contact for feedback on your interview performance or application.

This is a great way to show that you have a growth mindset, and you may receive valuable insights that can be applied as you continue your job search. You may also want to make an effort to establish professional connections. Connect with interviewers on LinkedIn (this is usually perceived as appropriate in the PR profession) and engage thoughtfully and positively with their content.

Don’t: Debate the decision, vent on social media or burn bridges.

It is completely natural to feel disappointed. That being said, I strongly advise job seekers to avoid any urge to argue or debate the decision. Pushing back against a rejection rarely changes the outcome and can even damage your professional reputation.

Also, it may be tempting to share some of your frustrations online. You may want to pause and resist this urge. Negative comments about a company or individual can quickly spread and have an adverse effect… harming your professional image. The PR profession is smaller than you might think. Today’s rejection could be tomorrow’s opportunity, so always aim to conduct yourself with professionalism and integrity.

Building a resilient career

A single rejection — or even a series of rejections — doesn’t define your professional journey. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint. By handling setbacks with grace and professionalism, you’re building a reputation for resilience and maturity that will last throughout your career.

  • Practice healthy processing. Develop a personal ritual to process rejection in a healthy, positive way. This could be treating yourself to a coffee, going for a run or journaling about the experience.
  • Revise your goals. After a rejection, set new, achievable career goals for yourself, or revise your existing goals as needed. This shifts your focus forward and maintains your momentum.
  • Seek support. Lean on your trusted professional network. Reach out to mentors or career counselors for professional advice, fresh ideas and emotional support if appropriate.
  • Keep improving. Continuously work on your skills and stay updated with industry trends. This ensures that you’re always putting your best foot forward and staying marketable, even if you find yourself between jobs.
  • Self-compassion. Be kind to yourself. Acknowledge your feelings of disappointment, but don’t let them define you or your worth.

Remember, in a job search, every “no” brings you one step closer to the right “yes.” By maintaining professionalism, focusing on your growth and keeping a positive outlook, you will be able to transform those rejections from setbacks into a great comeback!
