 The micromanager. Prefers shouting to give feedback. Steals credit for your work. Provides zero guidance or constructive feedback. Dwells on what went wrong over and over again. Sends passive-aggressive emails. Makes negative comments about your appearance. 


Over the years, our team members have shared unbelievable and disheartening stories about bad supervisors — including the tales shared at the beginning of this column. Everyone, it seems, has experienced a toxic workplace at some point in their career. And, even though they move on to a new company, they carry those experiences to a new job.

So how do you set up your newest team members to succeed in light of previous bad experiences? It starts with a supportive culture and environment.
