It’s 9:30 p.m. and a familiar ping sound emits from your smartphone. You have a notification alert. It’s your Microsoft Teams app; a co-worker at your agency is letting you know about a client issue. You hesitate. It’s late and your bed beckons. Still, there’s an instinct to respond.
Until recently, most American workers faced this dilemma infrequently. Quitting time was usually around 5 p.m., and the sacred space of personal time reigned until you arrived at work the next morning. Then COVID happened and remote work boomed — leaving more and more workers feeling a simmering tension with work/life balance.
