PR’s Role in Today’s Stressful Society

Our publics are under stress.
Suicide has become the second leading cause of death for 10- to 24-year-olds and the fourth for 35- to 44-year-olds. Moreover, an April 2021 CDC study found that the drug overdose death rate rose by nearly 30% over the year prior.
Meanwhile, we see extreme partisan divides, fortified by walls of cognitive dissonance. We see what were once apolitical issues now becoming fodder for argument. And we see judgment everywhere online and off. As the Netflix original film “The Social Dilemma” points out, we were not built to be exposed to the judgments of the hundreds of thousands of people out there.
