The Return to the Statement Era: Knowing When to Speak Out
Crystal Borde, vice president at Vanguard Communications and president of PRSA’s National Capital Chapter, offered timely insights on an organization potentially speaking out after a new White House administration takes office. As she writes:
“Organizational leadership often leans on this practice of issuing statements to respond to significant government policy changes or initiatives to show support or take a public stand on societal issues. When done well and at the appropriate time, these statements can communicate your organization’s authenticity, transparency, and accountability to your stakeholders who need and want to know that your actions align with your organizational values.
When is it appropriate to make a statement? Does every policy change demand a response?”
Honoring Dr. King’s Legacy: Lessons in Communication for Today’s Leaders
Sabrina Browne and Thomas Bennett III, co-chairs of PRSA’s Black Voices Affinity Group, provided thought leadership and embraced the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on MLK Day. From their post:
“Dr. King’s legacy is a challenge to all of us to communicate with purpose, integrity, and vision. As co-chairs of PRSA’s Black Voices Affinity Group, we remain committed to ensuring that the next generation of Black communicators carries this torch forward, building on his legacy to shape a world that truly reflects the dream he so powerfully envisioned.
Together, let’s communicate with the conviction and clarity that Dr. King embodied — and in doing so, honor his timeless contributions to justice and equality.”
Navigating TikTok’s Still-Uncertain Future for Brands and Creators
It was a whirlwind start to 2025 for TikTok and its nearly 170 million users in the United States. After a 16-hour hiatus, the platform returned online. On Jan. 20, President Trump signed an executive order to keep TikTok operating for 75 days and told the Department of Justice not to enforce the ban’s penalties.
I spoke with Laney Goff, executive vice president of Strella Social Media and a TikTok creator, for her thoughts on next steps for marketers and communicators who rely on TikTok.
“The most important thing is to continue to make content. You don’t want to assume the worst; you want to continue to serve the people on that platform, whether it’s up in the air or not. But you also have to be smart,” she said.
Here’s more from our interview:
“Having that balance and just making sure that you’re letting people know — especially if you have an email list, if you send out a newsletter — any way that you can contact your audience, to consistently provide that important content that you give to them, that helps them, gives your expertise, sells your product, whatever it is.”
