Bold, Joyful & Just: DEI Leadership Certificate Program

May 14, 21, 28, June 4 and 11, 2025, from 3–4:30 p.m. EDT

When you hear the acronym “DEI,” what feelings arise? Does the term evoke a contentious cultural and political conversation? Does it evoke three different concepts, each with its own meaning and application? Does it evoke collaboration, joy and community?

Led by facilitator Avi Edelman, PRSA invites you to join a lively, interactive learning community as we explore key concepts related to building DEI leadership. In five live, discussion-based modules, participants will explore social identity, bias mitigation and action tools for creating work cultures that are vibrant, relational and successful. We’ll look at why DEI concepts can feel so polarizing and reclaim an approach that is bold, joyful and just.

Participants will be part of PRSA’s Online Community, an exclusive forum offering private access and interactive dialogue with other members taking the program.

After completing the certificate program, participants will be awarded a certificate of completion and a digital badge.

The program will be conducted as Zoom meetings and will not be recorded.

Course Modules

Module 1: Masks to Multitudes (Part 1): Embracing Identity

Wednesday, May 14, 3–4:30 p.m. EDT

What does it mean to “bring my whole self” to my work? What does it mean for colleagues to “bring their whole self” to work?

In this module, we will explore social identities and other factors that shape how we see the world and how the world sees us. We will consider what it takes to create an environment that doesn’t simply welcome people of all identities but nourishes and affirms those identities.

Module 2: Masks to Multitudes (Part 2): Fostering Accountability

Wednesday, May 21, 3–4:30 p.m. EDT

In the second half of “Masks to Multitudes,” we will examine forces that can create — and reproduce — environments of either inclusion or exclusion. We will introduce tools and exercises to help us articulate our values and make sure those values are backed by intentional professional practices. And we will consider why efforts to create environments of equity and belonging often face backlash, and how to set up these efforts for success.

Module 3: Understanding and Mitigating Unconscious Bias

Wednesday, May 28, 3–4:30 p.m. EDT

Have you ever heard someone say, “I don’t make assumptions about anyone”? Have you said it yourself? Unfortunately, research shows that the statement is nearly impossible to put into practice. At any given moment, we are exposed to millions of pieces of information, and neurons in our brain send signals at speeds over 100 mph. The very brain functions that help us navigate a complicated world can also lead us to follow unrecognized snap judgments and make decisions that recirculate patterns we may not even realize we’ve absorbed. And it is just as likely to show up in a professional environment as it is in the grocery store aisle.

This module will explore what unconscious bias really is, why it exists and what evidence-based strategies we can use to do something about it.

Module 4: Building a Culture of Empathy

Wednesday, June 4, 3–4:30 p.m. EDT

Many of us consider ourselves to be empathetic people: We try to be good listeners, we support our colleagues and friends, and we say, “My door is always open” to ideas or suggestions. We know this is important: According to Ernst & Young’s 2023 Empathy in Business Survey, over 75% of workers believe that empathetic leadership reduces turnover, improves morale, increases productivity, develops respect and inspires positive change.

And yet, the same study found that more than half of employees find their company’s efforts at empathy to be dishonest. Why is it so difficult to create empathetic work environments when so many of us are empathetic people?

This module will explore empathy not as an innate demeanor but rather as a specific set of tools and strategies that can be deployed to cultivate and maintain a work environment where everyone feels valued. We will learn about the neuroscientific basis of empathy, review skills for 1:1 conversations and group environments, examine feedback as an empathy tool and talk about common challenges to empathy in the workplace.

Module 5: Action Planning for Success

Wednesday, June 11, 3–4:30 p.m. EDT

Even when there is a recognized need for change, it is difficult to move the needle in a large, complicated workplace. What can I do to create an inclusive environment? What does DEI accountability look like? How does it fit in with my other goals?

In this module, we’ll engage these questions head-on as we explore models for managing change, building buy-in and creating achievable DEI goals. Participants will leave feeling confident in how to leverage their influence as company leaders to create a culture of meaningful change.
